Dementia Charity Supporter Chris Tackles the Dunes in the Sahara for his Mum

This February ‘ADS’ Supporter Chris will be taking on an exciting challenge: trekking through the Sahara Desert in Morocco for seven days. He’s doing this to raise funds for Dementia.

Chris and his Mum

Chris’ reason for taking on this challenge is personal. His mum is living with Dementia and Chris together with his sister share her care alongside professional help who come to the house. “I want to help others who are going through what my mum is going through”, Chris told us.

What has Chris signed up for? It won’t be a gentle stroll! Over seven days, Chris will be trekking through a mix of soft sand dunes, firm stony ground and some more dunes. His shoes will fill with sand, his feet sink into the dunes. At night he will sleep in a tent under the desert sky. This challenge will most definitely test him mentally and physically.

To prepare, Chris is following a gym training plan to build up stamina and doing lots of walking as well. He’s excited of course, but also admits to feeling nervous when he thinks about the realities of having no phone, no toilets and days of pushing through exhaustion. But Chris says this is nothing compared to what his Mum faces every day.

People like Chris who decide to do something to help People affected by Dementia is what keeps our local independent charities going. We are incredibly grateful for his efforts and for choosing to support our members in this way.

Chris sets off in February and we’ll be cheering him on from more comfortable surroundings! We can’t wait to hear about his adventure when he returns.
