A KID’S GUIDE TO DEMENTIA

by Tegan Harris

Dementia is a condition that affects whole Families - including Young People. The total amount of Young Carers in the UK is now estimated to be around 800,000. With Dementia affecting more and more People every year, the challenge to educate Young People about what they may experience when a loved one is diagnosed with the condition is ever more important.

‘A Kid’s Guide to Dementia’ was written to do exactly that. Author Tegan Harris wrote the book when aged 17. She discovered that there was very little information out there for young people when researching for a school project.

Working in collaboration with ‘ADS’, it is hoped that the book will raise awareness at the same time as raising funds to support those affected by Dementia. The book is available to buy below, either as a hard copy or to download via Amazon straight to your e-reader, tablet or other digital device.

Note from the author Tegan Harris:
”When creating this book, I talked with many experts and people personally affected by Dementia including Carers, Former Carers, Advisors, Volunteers and Supporters of the Charity. They helped me to understand what I needed to know in order to be able to make this book perfect for you to read.

In this book, you will learn about different types of Dementia, what you can do to help someone with Dementia or their Carer, activities that you can do and answer other questions you may have.

I hope that it will give you an understanding of Dementia and how you can communicate and interact, whether the person is a family member or a friend.”

Review from Rebecca Bowcott, Denbighshire Voluntary Services Council - April 2025:

“As part of the Dementia Aware Denbighshire project here at DVSC (Denbighshire Voluntary Services Council) we offer dementia friends information sessions to children and young people and use this book as a follow up for children/young people who want to find out more so provide any schools etc. with a copy for their libraries. We also have copies of the book available at any events that we go to and the books have been picked up by care homes to have on display for visitors and also by charities working with people with LD have commented how useful they have found the book due to the simple explanations throughout the book.

The book is extremely well written and really helps that is written by a young person with  clear, easy to understand explanations and examples. The activities and recipes are also really good.

If anyone ever asks about talking to children about dementia this book is one of my first recommendations.”

Review from the’ADS’ Patron, Sue Holderness :

“This is an excellent book. The author, Tegan Harris, has managed to present facts and statistics about dementia in an entertaining, interesting way. It is aimed at children between the ages 8 -11, but I would recommend it to all age groups. It is fun to read and gives very useful advice for all of us who may be dealing with friends or relations who are living with dementia. I loved it!”

About the Author Tegan Harris:

Tegan Harris researched and wrote this book for her Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) while a scholarship student at Hurtwood House, Surrey, having identified that there was a lack of information on Dementia written specifically for those of junior school age.

A Wicked Young Writer Highly Commended Finalist, she attended Dementia training with ‘ADS’ and interviewed staff and those living with Dementia, extending her knowledge beyond academic research. She now works in film marketing while still supporting the charity close to her heart.

Tegan donated all rights to the book to ‘ADS’ to enable them to raise both funds and awareness.
